Building resilience …. and making wine

2019 Tasmanian AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award State Winner, Dr Anh Nguyen has been busy making new batches of wine while bunkered down in Tasmania during COVID-19. Unable to travel overseas due to the global restrictions, hasn’t stopped her from launching a new wine product in Vietnam and building an automatic frost control system, which is driven by artificial intelligence.

In September 2019, Anh Nguyen attended the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Awards Gala Dinner in Canberra representing Tasmania. Two weeks after, Anh set sail for Vietnam, launching her new wine product in opposite ends of the country, from Hanoi in northern Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City in the south.

Anh is inspired by nature meeting engineering and farming and that is why she describes her work as a nature-first business.

Planting trees helps this Coal River Valley winery maintain its sustainable farming methods

Anh Nguyen is the owner and operator of Ese Vineyards, a boutique vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. While only operating on 6.5 hectares of land, what Nguyen is trying to achieve on her small family farm is a self-supporting system that improves instead of degrades the earth - and a product that consumers increasingly demand: biodynamic wine. The vineyard was established in 1994 and was run using traditional farming practices until 2017 when Nguyen took it over. Reestablishing the vineyard to produce biodynamic wine, Nguyen has recruited biodynamic farming practices to create a sustainable ecosystem and award-winning wine. Planting trees to reduce noise and provide a barrier against pollution from the adjacent road were a critical part of the equation
